German officials halt illegal car exports to Russia

The Prosecutor’s Office in Bonn, in cooperation with the Office for Customs Investigation in Essen, has announced an investigation into a person who sold and brought a large number of luxury vehicles worth more than four million euros to Russia.

The suspect was transporting the cars under the guise of legal export to third countries, according to the statement from the prosecutor’s office.

On September 26, 2024, searches were conducted at two real estate properties in Koenigswinter, and two vehicles and a bank account were seized.

According to the prosecutor’s statement, the investigation continues and no further details will be provided at this time.

In March 2022, the European Union imposed sanctions on the export of luxury goods to Russia, including vehicles priced above 50,000 euros, as well as machinery, jewelry, perfume, bags, precious stones, delights, and expensive alcohol.
