Georgia to face EU sanctions

European countries urge new sanctions on Georgia.

“We see some serious backsliding in Georgia and we will discuss what more we can do. There are all options on the table, including suspension of the visa free regime and other elements that could make the Georgian government to change the calculus,” said Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Kęstutis Budrys, the head of Latvia’s Foreign Ministry, said, “We must prepare sanctions against all those who were involved in the arrest and imprisonment of political leaders.”

Latvia decided not to be content with words. On 14 July, this country added 55 Georgian citizens to its list of persona non grata. These people are banned from entering Latvia indefinitely.

On October 28, 2024, mass protests began in Georgia after the announcement of the preliminary official results of the parliamentary elections. The ruling Georgian Dream party, led by Bidzina Ivanishvili, has declared victory following the results of these elections. The demonstrators claimed that the elections were rigged.

February 13, 2025 The European Parliament has adopted a resolution stating that it does not recognize the results of the parliamentary and presidential elections as legitimate.
