A native of Russia was arrested in Canada for violating sanctions.

A native of Russia, Anton Trofimov, a Canadian businessman, was arrested in Canada for violating Canadian trade sanctions.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has arrested him for violating the sanctions that prohibit technology trade with Russia. Anton Trofimov made a first appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice at Toronto on May 22, 2025.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police clarified that the investigation was conducted with foreign partners, including the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“This arrest is an example of how close collaboration with our Canadian partners can result in significant impact such as disruptions to Russia’s attempts to evade U.S. and Canadian sanctions,” said Special Agent in Charge Brett D. Skiles of the FBI Miami Field Office.

It is likely that the police informed about Anton Trofimov, a native of Novosibirsk (Russia) who was sanctioned by the United States in May 2023. He was suspected of supplying electronic components to Russia through Asia Pacific Links Ltd., which were used in military drones, such as the Orlan-10, which are used for reconnaissance by the Russian military.
