Australia deployed HMAS Sydney to enforce sanctions against North Korea

The Australian Defence Department has announced the deployment of HMAS (Her Majesty’s Australian Ship), the cruiser Sydney, to enforce sanctions against North Korea.

HMS Sydney participates in Operation Argos, an international effort led by Australia, Canada, France, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States to limit North Korean imports of refined oil, crude oil, and exports of coal.

“The ship is equipped with an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter and a suite of sensors that allow us to monitor illegal ship-to-ship transfers of sanctioned goods. We are supporting Operation Argos as part of a three-month Regional Presence Deployment which commenced in late March,” said Commanding Officer HMAS Sydney, Commander Ben Weller.
