Australia has introduced a nationwide sanctions regime targeting 140 individuals and entities linked to the Taliban.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced, “We have imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on three so-called Taliban ‘ministers’ and the so-called Taliban “Chief Justice” for their involvement in the oppression of women and girls and in undermining good governance or the rule of law. This includes restricting access to education, employment, freedom of movement and the ability to participate in public life.”

Minister Wong noted that since Kabul’s fall, Australia has allocated more than $260 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, prioritizing support for women and girls. An additional $50 million is earmarked for the 2025/26 period, facilitated through a dedicated humanitarian authorization.
Australia has become the first nation to implement a standalone sanctions framework specific to Afghanistan, enhancing its response to the deteriorating conditions. This regime complements existing sanctions Australia maintains against other nations, including Iran, Russia, and North Korea.
