Australia imposes sanctions on Russians involved in the poisoning and death of Alexei Navalny

The Australian government has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on 14 individuals responsible for suppressing political expression in Russia.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that these sanctions complement the previous ones against those involved in the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, and she also announced that she planned to meet with Navalny’s widow.

“The human rights situation in Russia continues to deteriorate with violent crackdowns aimed at suppressing human rights and anti-war advocacy. We condemn Russia’s intimidation and reprisals against civil society and human rights defenders, and reiterate our call for Russia to comply with its international human rights obligations,” said Penny Wong.

Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition leader, died suddenly last month while serving a 19-year sentence in an Arctic prison. His funeral was held in Moscow on March 1, 2023.
