Australian police charged a businessman with transferring funds to Iranian banks

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) charged a 34-year-old man from Sydney for allegedly transferring about $650,000 to sanctioned Iranian banks.

According to the AFP, the man was the director of a company that allegedly processed 543 international currency transfers totalling $649,308 to sanctioned banks in Iran over a 12-month period.

On 30 July 2025, investigators executed search warrants at the man’s Wentworthville home and Auburn business, seizing a number of electronic devices.

Forensic digital examination allegedly revealed evidence of fund transfers to designated Iranian banks. The man was served with a court notice on 17 September 2024 to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court charged with violating a sanction law.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, and/or a fine of the greater of $825,000 or three times the value of the transaction in question.
