A shipment of sanctioned timber from Russia was seized in the Netherlands.
On April 17, the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) seized timber stocks from two companies. According to preliminary data, these companies continue to trade sanctioned Russian timber through Chinese suppliers.
Earlier, in June 2024, a man and a woman were detained on suspicion of involvement in the Russian timber trade.
FIOD did not provide any details about the volume of seized wood or the names of the companies, saying that the prosecutor’s office was investigating.
The ban on the supply of Russian timber has been in effect since April 2022. The purpose of such sanctions, as explained by FIOD, is to prevent Russia from receiving income that would allow it to take actions “(further)” destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.
