Estonia has introduced a new sanctions mechanism that allows restrictions to be imposed on individuals who incite separatism, undermine the sovereignty of states or commit a serious financial crime involving public funds.
The new sanction, proposed by the Government of Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, means a ban on entry into the country for those individuals.
The persons subject to this ban will be determined by order of the Foreign Affairs Minister.
“The new sanction makes it possible to impose entry bans on individuals for whom there is evidence of participation in, or active support for, activities abroad that violate international law and its principles”, explained the minister.
After the introduction of this mechanism, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the imposition of sanctions on Balkan politician Milorad Dodik and Irina Vlah, the bashkan of ATU Gagauzia, a region in Moldova.

Milorad Dodik was the head of the Republic of Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In August, the election commission revoked his presidential mandate based on a court decision banning him from politics for six years.
