Estonia expands sanctions on all Russian gas

The government of the Republic of Estonia has approved an extension of sanctions proposed by the Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna.

According to Tsakha, the aim is to impose a total ban on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia.

”At present, it is permitted to purchase and import liquefied natural gas from Russia provided it is not used within the distribution network. Once the amendment enters into force, the import ban will also cover liquefied natural gas imported outside the distribution network,” explainded Margus Tsahkna.

The ban on Russian LNG will come into effect on 1st January 2026. Imports of Russian-origin LNG have also been restricted in Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania.

On 8 February, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania fully decoupled from the Russian electricity system and joined the continental European frequency area. This step strengthened the Baltic countries’ energy security by making their energy system independent of Russia.
