The Council of the European Union has imposed personal sanctions on three Syrian officials: Louai Emad El-Din Al-Munajid, Firas Hassan Qaddour and Ahmed Mohammad Bustaji.
These officials are responsible for the continued violent repression by the Syrian regime against civilians. Sanctions against Syria were imposed in 2011 after the violent repressions by the Assad regime against the civilian population. The sanctions target the Assad government and its supporters as well as certain sectors of the Syrian economy that benefit the regime.
Previously, the EU adopted economic sanctions, including an arms embargo, an import ban on crude oil and petroleum products from Syria, a ban on investment in the Syrian oil industry, and companies engaged in the construction of new power plants for electricity production in Syria, as well as a freeze on the assets of the central bank of Syria held in the European Union.
