EU prolongs sanctions against pro-Russian politicians in Moldova

The Council of the European Union has extended sanctions against persons responsible for actions aimed at destabilizing, undermining, or threatening the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova until April 29, 2026.

These EU sanctions affect 16 individuals and two entities. They were first imposed in April 2023 at the request of Moldovan authorities. They affect, in particular, pro-Russian politician Ilan Shor, Dmitry Milyutin, a supervisor of Moldova by the FSB, Evghenia Guțul, head of autonomous territorial entity Gagauziya, which is part of Moldova, and the organization Scutul Poporului.

“In its conclusions of 21-22 March 2024, the European Council reaffirmed its commitment to provide all relevant support to the Republic of Moldova in addressing the challenges it faces as a consequence of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and to strengthen the country’s resilience, security and stability in the face of destabilising activities by Russia and its proxiess,” the Council said in a statement.
