The Japanese government imposed new sanctions on Russia, which took effect on January 10, 2022.
Japan’s sanctions include 11 individuals, 29 organizations, and three banks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the new sanctions were due to the current situation in Ukraine and Japan’s desire to help maintain international peace.
The new sanctions primarily target Russian enterprises involved in the military industry and major businesses.
For example, Pavel Marinychev, the CEO of Alrosa, was included in the list of sanctions. Alrosa is a leading Russian diamond mining company with 35,000 employees who produce 30% of the world’s diamonds and about 90% of Russia’s diamond production.
The Joint Stock Company Russian Institute of Radio Navigation and Time was also sanctioned. This company produces navigation equipment for military purposes.
Among the banks included in Japan’s sanctions list, there is the Timer Bank from Russia. In 2024, the US imposed sanctions on this bank for its involvement in transferring funds to North Korea.
