Kyrgyzstan resolves sanctions issues with the United States

Kyrgyzstan seems to have decided on the direction of its sanctions policy. On Tuesday, June 24, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Meder Abakirov, met with the U.S. Ambassador, Leslie Viguery.

Ministry reported that during the meeting, the parties “expressed their readiness to work together to find mutually acceptable solutions to the sanctions issue.” It seems that Kyrgyzstan has made a choice between Russia’s assistance from a number of local companies in circumventing sanctions and cooperation with the United States.

Until recently, the United States and other countries imposed targeted sanctions on Kyrgyz companies.

In 2023, the United States imposed sanctions against a number of companies that supplied electronic components for the defense industry and aviation equipment from Kyrgyzstan to Russia: LLC RM Design and Development (RMDD), GTME Tekhnologii and Cargoline.

At the beginning of 2025, the United States added Kyrgyz Keremet Bank to the sanctions list. A statement from the US Treasury Department said that since the summer of 2024, Keremet Bank officials have been coordinating with Russian officials and the Russian bank Promsvyazbank, which is on the US sanctions list, for sanctions evasion schemes.
