Latvian State Security Service informs about cases of suspected violations of EU sanctions

The Latvian State Security Service (VDD) published an annual report on its activities in 2024. The report includes information about sanctions against Russia.

According to the report, the VDD opened seven criminal cases last year on suspicion of violations of EU sanctions against Russia imposed on companies or individuals. In two of these cases, Latvian citizens provided IT consulting services to Russian companies despite the ban. Other cases involve providing services to companies whose owners are on the EU’s sanctions list or working for a Latvian company owned by such a person.

VDD received reports about possible violations of sanctions in 273 cases in 2018. Of these, 150 were from banks, 6 were from legal entities, and 14 were from individuals. The remaining messages were sent to VDD by government agencies.

The majority of reports (63%) were about possible violations of EU sanctions against Russia, while 10% were about possible sanctions against Belarus.

The annual report is available on the VDD website.
