Lithuania tightens customs control over timber

Lithuania is tightening checks on compliance with sanctions against Russia.

Starting from October 15, the Lithuanian Customs will apply stricter control over the origin of imported timber and timber products. This is explained by the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia in 2022. The ban on imports of products from the Russian timber industry into the EU includes wood and products derived from it.

Now, the Lithuanians may need to provide more information about the origin of their goods, including detailed information about production processes, raw materials used, suppliers of raw materials, country of origin, and cost of raw materials. Customs may also require documents related to purchases of raw materials or logging permits. Documents submitted in a language other than Lithuanian must be translated into Lithuanian.

In case of improper confirmation of the origin of wood and wood products, the goods will not be released into free circulation. The responsibility for incorrect declaration of timber origin lies with the importer, even if the violation occurs due to negligence.
