Norway supports the lifting of sanctions on Syria

After US President Donald Trump announced on May 13 that he intended to order the lifting of sanctions against Syria, similar calls were heard in Europe.

“I welcome President Trump’s announcement that sanctions on Syria will be lifted. Norway has argued for the same regarding European sanctions. The government of President Al Sharaa must get the opportunity to prove that they can unite Syria,” said Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

Ahmed Hussein al-Shraa was declared president of Syria for a transition period in January 2025, following the departure from the country by former president Bashar al Assad who has taken political asylum in Russia.

At a meeting with Syrian President Al Sharaa on May 31st, Donald Trump encouraged him to:

  • To sign the Avraham Agreements with Israel (agreements on normalization of relations between Israel and a number of Arab states signed in 2020-2021).
  • Order all foreign terrorists to leave Syria.
  • Expel the Palestinian terrorists from the country.
  • To help the United States prevent the resurgence of ISIS.
  • To take responsibility for the detention centers of ISIS militants in northeastern Syria.
