Opposition politician finds tanker with sanctioned Russian fuel in Georgia

Levan Khabeishvili, chairman of the political council of the Georgian United National Movement, said on social media that a ship carrying sanctioned diesel fuel from Russia was docked in the port of Batumi, specifically a CAPIBARA-flagged Indonesian tanker carrying 15,000 tonnes of diesel.

The fuel is believed to have been supplied by Gazprom Neft a Russian company, and the intermediary supplier was Bonex, an offshore company. The Georgian Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance has responded to Khabeishvili’s allegations, calling them disinformation.

“As a result of an inspection conducted by the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, it was confirmed that the vessel and the company owning the vessel are not subject to international sanctions. In addition, as a result of the inspection of the Revenue Service, it was found that international sanctions do not apply to the cargo, since the price of the goods does not exceed the upper limit of the price set by the sanctions,” the Revenue Service stated.
