Russians in Estonia support sanctions against Russia

According to a survey by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, 75% of respondents, including nearly 90% of the Estonian population and nearly 50% of the Russian population, supported the sanctions against Russia.

70% of respondents disagreed with the statement that NATO should eliminate its military presence and exercises in Estonia and other Eastern European countries, as required by Russia.

Estonia shares a border with Russia and is implementing EU sanctions against it.

In April 2025, the Estonian Navy detained the Kiwala tanker in the Baltic Sea. The European Union considers this ship to be involved in Russia’s “shadow fleet” which is used to transport oil from Russia bypassing sanctions.

An inspection revealed 40 shortcomings which led to the temporary prohibition of the ship from continuing its journey until these shortcomings are eliminated. Kiwala was registered under the flag of Djibouti but the authorities said that this flag had been withdrawn.
