The president of the Russian community has been detained in Latvia due to sanctions

he Latvian State Security Service (VDD) has detained a well-known political activist in Latvia on suspicion of violating EU sanctions “by distributing publications on a Russian propaganda resource.”

On November 26, 2025, VDD opened a criminal case against a Latvian citizen after discovering publications created by this person on a Russian website operated by a foundation included in the EU’s list of international sanctions. The criminal case was initiated in accordance with article 84, paragraph 1, that is, for violating EU sanctions.

VDD states that providing any resources to an entity under EU sanctions is considered a violation of EU sanctions.

According to local media, the detainee is Viktor Gushchin ( Viktors Guščins), president of the Russian Community of Latvia.
