In April, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs imposed personal sanctions on several members of the British Parliament. The list included 21 British subjects, including members of the House of Lords and members of the Commons.
SanctionsLists.org asked the sanctioned Lords and MPs how they felt about the sanctions.
“I had and have no plans to visit Russia. They are mistaken if they imagine that these sanctions will stop parliamentarians from speaking out against the illegal invasion of Ukraine and the abduction of at least 20,000 Ukrainian children,” said David Alton, Independent Crossbench Member of the House of Lords. He stated that Russian sanctions “will simply have the opposite effect.”
“Being sanctioned by Putin’s regime is a badge of honour. It confirms that standing up for Ukraine’s freedom and against Russian tyranny matters – and that it’s making an impact,” said Tim Roca, the Labour MP for Macclesfield.
The Labour MP has visited Ukraine during the conflict and met with civilians. “No sanction will silence me. I’ll continue to speak out for Ukraine and against the Kremlin’s brutal campaign,” he said.
Tim Roca added that “Russia’s actions are a grave threat to peace, stability, and democracy not just in Europe, but around the world. The UK must remain united in standing with Ukraine and defending democratic values.”
