UK sanctions Sri Lankan generals

The UK government has announced sanctions on several Sri Lankan generals for serious human rights violations.

According to the government’s statement, these individuals were sanctioned:

  • Former Head of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, Shavendra Silv
  • Former Navy Commander, Wasantha Karannagoda
  • Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Jagath Jayasuriya
  • Former military commander of a terrorist group, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, also known as Karuna Amman. He later created and led a paramilitary group called the Karuna Group that worked for the Sri Lankan Army.

“The UK government is committed to human rights in Sri Lanka, including seeking accountability for human rights violations and abuses that took place during the civil war and which continue to impact communities today,” said David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development.
