US sanctions a Hungarian official linked to the government of Viktor Orban

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has sanctioned Antal Rogan, a senior government official who has a critical role in the government.

According to the statement from OFAC, Rogan used his position to enrich himself and others loyal to his party by controlling several government agencies, including the National Communications Office, Digital Government Agency and Hungarian Tourism Agency.

“We continue to urge Hungary’s leaders to address corruption proactively, unequivocally, and decisively. A more transparent Hungary will contribute to a stronger Transatlantic Alliance and a more prosperous Europe,” said Matthew Miller, the Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State.

Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, said on Facebook that placing Antal Rogán, who heads the Prime Minister’s cabinet office, on a sanctions list by the US was “personal revenge” from the outgoing US ambassador leaving Hungary without honor.
