US sanctions Iranian officers responsible for the probable death of Robert Levinson

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on three officials of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), who were allegedly involved in the death of former FBI Special Agent Robert A. Levinson.

Gholamhossein Mohammadnia, Reza Amiri Moghadam and Taqi Daneshvar from the Iranian MOIS were added to the US sanction list.

“Iran’s treatment of Mr Levinson remains a stain on Iran’s already poor record of human rights abuses,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Robert A “Bob”Levinson disappeared on March 9th, 2007 in Kish Island Iran. US officials believe that Levinson was arrested by Iranian intelligence officers to be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations.

In November 2019, the US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program, administered by the Diplomatic Security Service, offered a reward of up to $20 million for information leading to the location and return of Bob Levinson.
