A group of 50 members of the US Senate, including both conservatives and Democrats, have proposed tightening sanctions against Russia by drafting a new bill.
The senators want the sanctions imposed if Russia refuses to negotiate a lasting peace with Ukraine or undertakes military action that undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty. The legislation would also impose a 50% tariff on imports from countries buying Russian oil, gas and uranium.
“We are pleased to announce that we have received overwhelming bipartisan support for our primary and secondary sanctions legislation against Russia. The sanctions against Russia require tariffs on countries who purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products. They are hard hitting for a reason,” US senator Lindsey Graham said.
Companion legislation is being introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Quigley, Joe Wilson and Marcy Kaptur.
