Working for the Russian media led to imprisonment

In Estonia, a court has sentenced journalist Svetlana Burceva to six years in prison for treason and violation of sanctions.

“Svetlana Burceva was accused of violating international sanctions by working for the Russian media company RIA Rossiya Segodnya, whose head, Dmitry Kiselev, is under financial sanctions. Thus, Svetlana Burceva provided economic resources for a person under sanctions through writing articles for online publication RIA Russia Today/BaltNews and photographing them,” the Estonian judicial website says.

Svetlana Burceva was also charged with “establishing and maintaining hostile relations with a foreigner Roman Romachev and helping him and the Russian company R-Technology in non-violent activities against the independence and sovereignty of Estonia”.

The court found Roman Romachev to be an FSB officer and named him the head of private intelligence company R-Technology.

The court’s decision has not yet entered into force, and it can be appealed to the Tallinn District Court within 30 days.

RIA Rossiya Segodnya is a Russian state-owned company that owns news media in several languages. The company was established by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
