The Canadian government has announced sanctions against the Russian authorities and “their local accomplices” in response to gross and systematic human rights violations on the territory of Ukraine.
In a statement, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that persons against whom sanctions were imposed today were involved in the systematic and widespread use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment against detained citizens of Ukraine, including prisoners of war and civilians.
They are officials and cooperated with the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN), the Federal Security Service (FSB), and the National Guard of Russia. Their direct involvement in the torture and deaths of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war, including human rights defenders, is well documented.
These individuals have been added to the sanction list:
