Canada imposes sanctions on Russian PMCs

The government of Canada imposed new sanctions on Russia, according to a statement published on the website of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The new sanctions include nine leaders of paramilitary organizations associated with Wagner, one senior member of Russian military leadership affiliated with the Kremlin’s Africa network, nine paramilitary groups operating in Ukraine, and 12 organizations responsible for extracting resources within this network.

Renova Group consists of management companies, private equity and portfolio investment funds that own and manage assets in the metallurgical, petroleum, machine-building, mining, construction, energy, telecommunications, nanotechnology, housing and communal services and the financial sector in Russia and abroad.

There are several private military companies which were sanctioned by Canada, such as DShRG Rusich, a combat detachment of Russian neo-Nazis who took part in the Russian-Ukrainian War first in Donbas from June 2014 to July 2015 on the side of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), and later during the Russian invasion of Ukraine as part of Russian troops.

The government of Canada also sanctioned Africa Corps, Russian military units operating in Africa, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Defense of Russia.
