The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China has issued an order imposing sanctions on US congressman from Massachusetts, Jim McGovern.
According to the ministry’s statement, in recent years, Congressman McGovern from Massachusetts has often made statements and taken actions that interfered in China’s domestic affairs and undermined China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests.
The order prohibits the senator and his family members from entering China, and organizations and individuals from cooperating with Jim McGovern.
Congressman McGovern represents District 2 in the House of Representatives in the United States. Jim McGovern has passed several bills into law which help the US hold accountable corrupt foreign officials and human rights abusers.
He also authored several pieces of legislation into law to hold the Chinese government accountable for human rights violations, including the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, the Tibet Policy and Support Act and the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.
In June 2024, the House passed a bipartisan bill introduced by US Representatives Jim McGovern and Michael McCaul and Senators Jeff Merkley and Todd Young to enhance US support for Tibet and promote dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama towards a peaceful resolution to the long-standing dispute over Tibet.
The Tibetan Resolution Act strengthens U.S. support for Tibet by empowering State Department officials to actively and directly counter misinformation about Tibet from the Chinese government and reject false claims that Tibet was part of China “since ancient times.”
