The Estonian government stated that it had received a plan from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which provides for a smooth transition to full customs control for all people and goods heading to Russia.
The Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that Estonia must do everything to prevent the transportation of sanctioned goods through Estonia.
“Unfortunately, attempts to ignore sanctions and the passage of prohibited goods on our borders continue, as does the brutal war launched by Russia against the country and the people of Ukraine. By implementing full trade controls, we can make it more difficult to evade sanctions and make it more difficult for Russia to supply its military machine,” the Prime minister said.

The government added that both local authorities and transport and bus companies have been informed about the changes.
Instead of the current selective risk-based control, full customs control will take longer, and the number of border crossings towards the Russian Federation is expected to decrease.
The Estonian government decided to strengthen customs control over the movement of sanctioned goods at the border of Estonia and Russia on July 4, 2024.
