Georgian Railway declines to deal with a Russian company due to sanctions

JSC Georgian Railway refused to purchase electric locomotives in Russia worth $80.519.105 after learning about sanctions imposed by the US Treasury on Sinara Transport Machines, which owns Ural Locomotives, a company that manufactures electric locomotives.

Initially, The Liberty Institute, a Georgian human rights organization reported that Georgian Railway had purchased 10 electric locomotves from Russia.

The Liberty Institute claimed that the transaction was carried out through Georgia LLC which acquired the locomotives from the Ural Locomotives company.

Georgian Railway responded that this information is not true and that no contract has been signed with the contractor and there is no legal relationship at this time.

Ural Locomotives LLC, located in the city of Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Sverdlovsk Region, specializes in designing and manufacturing electric freight locomotives and Lastochka passenger trains. Ural Locomotive is a part of Sinara – Transport Machines, which was added to the US sanctions list in June 2018.
