Kyrgyzstan stops working with Russian card payment system

Kyrgyzstan will cease working with the Russian card payment system Mir.

“On February 23, 2024, OFAC (Department of the US Treasury responsible for monitoring foreign assets) placed sanctions on JSC National Payment Card System (operator of the Russian payment card system Mir). In order to reduce the risk of further sanctions, the Interbank Processing Center CJSC (guarantor of smooth operation of Elkart national payments system) announced the termination of services for Mir bank cards as of April 5, 2024” – the Kyrgyz IPC said.

IPC was established in 2004 by the Kyrgyz National Bank and 11 commercial banks. It serves the country’s commercial banks and is the sole operator of the Elkart national payment system.

Previously, banks in Armenia had refused to work with the Mir payments system.
