The Council of the European Union has renewed restrictive measures on the Russian Federation for another six months, until January 31st, 2025.
These sanctions were significantly expanded in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine. They include restrictions on trade, finance, technology, and dual-use goods.
Additionally, there is a ban on seaborne oil imports from Russia, the de-SWIFTing of some Russian banks, and the suspension of broadcasting activities of several pro-Kremlin disinformation outlets in the EU.
The Council claimed that, as long as illegal actions by the Russian Federation continue to violate the prohibition on the use of force, which is a serious breach of obligations under international law, it is appropriate to maintain all the measures imposed by the EU in force and to take additional measures if necessary.
