The European Parliament demanded to stop importing Russian fossil fuels into the EU and limit the Russian “shadow” fleet.
On November 14, MEPs adopted a resolution calling for a total ban on all imports of Russian fossil fuels, including LNG, and for the EU to seriously reconsider its cooperation with third parties that help Russia bypass existing EU restrictive measures.
MEPs also demanded more targeted sanctions against the so-called “shadow fleet” that exports oil and LNG from Russia. In the resolution, they called for more specific measures against these ships in future EU sanctions packages, targeting individual ships, their owners, operators, managers, bank accounts, and insurance companies.
The Parliament also calls on the EU to strengthen its surveillance capabilities, especially by monitoring with drones and satellites, and to conduct targeted inspections at sea.
MEPs want EU member states to identify ports that are capable of receiving authorized vessels carrying crude oil and liquified natural gas (LNG), and seize illegal cargo without compensation.
