The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed blocking sanctions against several Russian media publishers and media managers.
These individuals and entities have been added to the SDN list (Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List):
- Dmitry Kiselev, CEO of Federal State Uitary Enterprise International Information Agency Rossiya Segodnya;
- Nelly Parutenko, Director of ANO Eurasia. According to Moldovan media, Parutenko collaborated with businessman Ilan Shor and organized trips of young Moldovan citizens to Russia;
- ANO Eurasia;
- ANO TV-Novosti, which manages the RT TV channel
Rossiya Segodnya is fully controlled by the Russian government. Rossiya unites Russian-language information resources, including RIA Novosti, PRIME, InoSMI, TOK, BaltNews, Ukraine.ru and Arctic.ru. It is represented abroad by the international news agency Sputnik.
On March 21, 2014, Dmitry Kiselev was added to the EU’s sanctions list as a “central figure in state propaganda supporting Russian troops in Ukraine”. On January 7, 2023, he was also added to Ukraine’s sanctions lists.
Kiselev has been known for his controversial statements. In 2013 he called for the “burial or burning” of gay people who died in road accidents.
