US has lifted sanctions on individuals associated with the Russian billionaire Usmanov

The United States has lifted sanctions on individuals associated with Russian billionaire Usmanov.

The US Department of Treasury has removed several individuals and companies from the sanctions list associated with Alisher Usmanov, including Demetrios Serghides, a citizen of Cyprus, and Cyprus companies Omnia Services Cyprus Ltd, Hightrail Ltd, and Abkhaz Omnia Antibes.

Serghides was sanctioned by the US in 2023 for being an adviser to Usmanov and handling financial matters on behalf of Usmanov as well as helping him acquire real estate and manage assets for both Usmanov himself and his family. In addition to Serghides’ removal from sanctions, the US also lifted sanctions on three Cypriots and one Briton who were also considered to be affiliated with Usmans’ companies.

In the statement of the US Treasury, it was said that Alisher Usmanov is one of the richest Russian billionaires, with extensive assets in many sectors of the Russian economy, as well as internationally. Usmanov is known to be close to many high-ranking Russian officials appointed by the United States, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as Dmitry Medvedev, the current deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council and former president and Prime Minister of Russia. It is reported that Medvedev benefited from the personal use of luxury residences controlled by Usmanov.
