The Council of the European Union has declared its readiness to impose new sanctions in response to Russia’s “destabilising activities against the EU and its member states”.
According to the statement of the EU Council, the new sanctions program will allow the EU to prosecute individuals and organizations involved in actions and policies of the government of the Russian Federation that undermine fundamental values of the EU and its member states.
Among the threats that could lead to sanctions, the Council highlighted the following: undermining electoral processes, threats and sabotage to economic activity or critical infrastructure, use of coordinated disinformation, and malicious cyber activity.
Under the new program, assets of sanctioned individuals are to be frozen. EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to these individuals. In addition, a ban on entry into the EU is introduced for individuals who are sanctioned.
