EU sanctions Iranian airlines for transferring drones to Russia

The European Union has imposed sanctions against seven individuals and seven legal entities that, according to its data, are involved in the transfer of missiles and drones by Iran to Russia.

According to the EU statement, the Iranian airlines Saha Airlines, Mahan Air, Iran Air and two procurement firms involved in the supply to Russia, as well as two companies engaged in the production of fuel used to launch missiles, have been added to the sanctions list.

In addition, the EU Council decided to impose restrictive measures against the Deputy Defence Minister of Iran, Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari, prominent officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force (IRGC-QF), IRGC Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, and IRGC Aerospace Force Space Division, as well as the managing directors of the EU-listed companies Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries (HESA) and Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO).

It is known that Russia has used drones called “Geran-2” during its invasion of Ukraine. Each drone can carry 50 kilograms of explosives. The Geran-2 is a Russian version of the Iranian military drone, Shahed 136, which was first introduced in 2020.
