The Court of Justice refused to lift sanctions against Artem Uss, who is wanted by the FBI

The Court of Justice of the European Union rejected the claim of Russian businessman Artem Uss, the son of Senator Aleksandr Uss, to lift EU sanctions against him.

Sanctions against Artem Uss were imposed in June 2023. The European Union justified these sanctions by the fact that the businessman owned Sibougol LCC, which had received “large state contracts” allegedly thanks to his father (formerly his father was governor of the Krasnoyarsk region).

In 2022, Artem Uss was detained in Milan on an arrest warrant issued by the United States government. The businessman was supposed to be extradited to the US, but he managed to escape from house arrest and returned to Russia.

According to the FBI, Artem Uss was closely associated with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

The FBI states that Uss orchestrated a transnational fraud, smuggling, and money laundering operation under the umbrella of Nord-Deutsche Industrieanlagenbau GmbH (NDA GmbH), a privately held industrial equipment and commodity trading company based in Hamburg, Germany.

As the owner of NDA, with another conspirator, Artem Uss, engaged in various activities in violation of US criminal laws and US sanctions, including illegal export of millions of dollars in military and dual-use technology from the US to Russia. Currently, the US State Department offers a reward up to $7 million for information leading to arrest and/or prosecution of Artem Uss.
