The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the political situation in Georgia. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 400 to 63, with 81 abstaining.
By this resolution, the Parliament urged the EU to impose new sanctions on officials and political leaders in Georgia who are responsible for democratic backsliding and electoral fraud, including prominent oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The Parliament also urged the media to stop spreading disinformation and the judges who passed politically motivated sentences to be removed from office.
Salome Zourabichvili was recognized as the legitimate president of Georgia by the European Parliament.
On October 28, 2024, protests began in Georgia after the announcement of the preliminary official results of the October 26 parliamentary elections. According to these results, Georgian Dream had won the majority of seats in Parliament. On December 14th, Georgia elected Mikhail Kavelashvili as its new President. He was the only candidate for the position due to opposition boycotts of the parliamentary results.
