Denmark strengthens sanctions controls over goods to Russia

Denmark has strengthened sanctions controls over goods for Russia.

Denmark joined stricter rules for controlling sanctioned goods shipped to Russia. Initially, an agreement aimed at strengthening and unifying controls over compliance with EU sanctions against Russia was signed by five countries in May 2024 – Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland. The document includes coordinated measures to eliminate illegal transport routes and joint measures applied to producers and exporters of goods when submitting additional documents. It also lists other measures intended to solve the problem of evading sanctions.

Croatia later joined the agreement and Denmark is now doing so, according to Darius Žvironas, the Director General of the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania.

In 2024, the Lithuanian customs service did not release 28.854 shipments sent or received from Russia and Belarus. For violating sanctions, legal entities were fined more than 16.7 million euros in fines. During this period (January-March) customs formalities were not completed for 2,838 exports, 552 imports, and 1,572 transit cases.
