US imposes sanctions on two high-ranking members of the Mexican cartel

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on two high-ranking members of the Mexican cartel Cartel del Noreste (CDN), formerly known as Los Zetas — Miguel Angel de Anda Ledezma and Ricardo Gonzalez Sauceda.

CDN is a criminal organization primarily operating in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon. The cartel is involved in drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms trafficking, money laundering, vehicle theft, and oil theft. Additionally, CDN has been involved in terrorist activities, including intimidating American citizens and local communities in Mexico.

In March 2022, CDN attacked the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo with gunfire and grenades following the arrest of a CDN member wanted for terrorism, homicide, and extortion in Mexico.

Miguel Angel de Anda Ledezma is responsible for procuring weapons and ammunition for CDN. Ricardo Gonzalez Sauceda led the cartel’s armed enforcement wing.
