The United States lifted sanctions on Syria

Almost 7 months after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, the United States lifted sanctions on Syria.

“The United States is committed to supporting a Syria that is stable, unified, and at peace with itself and its neighbors.  A united Syria that does not offer a safe haven for terrorist organizations and ensures the security of its religious and ethnic minorities will support regional security and prosperity,” according to the Decree signed by US President Donald Trump.

This is the first step towards a new relationship with Syria – united, stable, living in peace with itself and its neighbors, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Sanctions against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and individuals associated with him will remain in effect, the document says.

The fall of the Assad regime took place on December 8, 2024, and the former head of Syria was granted asylum in Russia.
